FAQs
Is my information really private?
Yes. Personal Serial Database (PSD) stores everything in one database file on your Mac, and the app never connects to the internet, so nothing is sent to Droplet Creative or anyone else. There are no accounts, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking. The database is encrypted with AES-256-GCM, the same kind of strong standard used by banks and governments. It is protected by your password and by a separate recovery key that only you hold. PSD doesn’t know your password and can’t reset it, which means nobody else can open your records for you either.
What happens if I forget my password or lose my recovery key?
If you forget your password, enter your recovery key on PSD’s unlock screen and you’re back in, with all your records intact. PSD shows the recovery key once, when you create your password. It cannot show it again, re-create it or replace it, so print it or store it somewhere safe and separate from your Mac. If you lose both your password and your recovery key, nobody can open the database, including us, and a backup won’t help because it uses the same password and key. We recommend making a backup with File ▸ Back Up Database… on a regular schedule, and keeping the recovery key somewhere you can find it years from now.
Is it safe to keep serial numbers and passwords in PSD?
PSD was built for exactly that, with a few honest limits. Your data is encrypted whenever it’s stored, and PSD runs inside Apple’s App Sandbox, so it can only touch the files you choose. Its strength depends partly on your Mac and your habits: choose a strong password, keep your Mac’s login protected, and be careful with exports. Unencrypted exports, such as CSV or plain text, can be read by anyone who gets the file, and PSD asks you to confirm that you understand the risk before it creates one. If you turn on “Remember on This Mac”, PSD opens without a password for anyone who can use your signed-in Mac account, so turn it off if others use your Mac.
What is PSD actually useful for, and can I bring my records in from other programs?
PSD keeps everything you need to reinstall, re-register or prove ownership of your software in one searchable place: serial numbers, license codes, registered names, purchase dates, costs, version numbers, notes and attached screenshots of receipts or license emails. You can look at one record at a time or browse every record in a table, sort and search them, group them into Collections, and keep two custom fields named whatever suits you. You can import records from CSV, TSV or plain text files with a simple field-matching screen, so a spreadsheet you already keep is a good starting point. You can also export your data at any time, so you’re never locked in.
